Kev Richardson
Long-time CEC member and author Kev "Ric" Richardson will be the speaker at the May General Meeting.
Songkran madness descends on Chiang Mai "officially" from April 13-15, but many expats and locals alike travel away during the month of April. Thus, CEC traditionally doesn't schedule a Saturday morning General Meeting in April.
Our next General Meeting will be Saturday, May 28, at Le Méridien Hotel. Arrive at 10 am for 10:30 am start. The program will feature an interview with author Ric Richardson about "White Settlement of Australia" and a presentation by Mr. Tjeert Kwant, President & CEO of Promenada Resort Mall about future plans for the mall.
Click here to see photos from the CEC General Meeting last month, Saturday, 26th March when Laurie Simmons, foreign volunteer with the Muang Police Force talked about "Expats and the Thai Police" Laurie had so many photos depicting the many ways that expats "interact" with the local police, that he didn't have time for questions from the audience, but he remained after the meeting to talk with people one-on-one. Laurie has agreed to return in a few months to talk about "Personal Safety" and to allow time for audience questions.
Foreigner ID check
According to both Laurie Simmons from the Muang Police Station and a recent article in the Bangkok Post, your Thai Drivers License isn't sufficient I.D. to establish your legal visa status in Thailand. Click on the image above to read the Bangkok Post article.
Laurie did address an issue on everyone's minds these days: Must we carry our passports with us at all times? Laurie said, no, in the case of recent police raids to check on foreigner visa status, it has been sufficient for a foreigner to show a copy of the photo page of the passport and current visa and entry stamp to demonstrate legal status in the country. No -- a Thai Drivers License isn't sufficient to establish legal status with the police. It is OK to show the police images of your passport, visa, entry stamp, permission to stay stamp, etc on your phone, according to Laurie.

Meeting Expats
Admittedly, many of Chiang Mai's resident expats schedule holidays during "smokey season", but that doesn't mean that all activity has ground to a halt. Looking for ways to stay active and make new friends? Check out the websites and Facebook pages of the CEC's Community Sponsors and Outside Group Activities.
Our two church sponsors, All Saints Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai Community Church always welcome newcomers each week. Each congregation gathers at a different time on Sundays, so you can visit both on the same day!
Chiang Mai International Rotary Club meets weekly in the Old City with interesting programs related to their mission of community service and welcome visitors interested in learning more about Rotary. The members of The Royal British Legion gather twice monthly for social time in the Night Bazaar area and welcome visitors. Please contact CMI Rotary and RBL for meeting details.
Some of CEC's Outside Group Activities, or "Clubs-Within-a-Club" take a break during the hot season, but many continue to meet regularly. Bridge Club, Computer Club, Dining Out Group, Ladies Lunch Group, Pickle Ball and Writers without Borders are just a few of the OGAs that maintain an active schedule year-round. Please contact any OGA of interest since each maintains their own email contact list.

Recently, we ran an article about how how to do 90-day reporting on-line and via post in several editions, with illustrations and links to the excellent description on the website of the Chiangmai Christian Community Classifieds. Judging by the number of "click thrus" that article generated, we'll keep the link as a permanent feature of this e-Newsletter: Immigration 90 Day Reporting "Simplified"
